Cygnet

Beds 6 Bathrooms 2 Car Parks 2

3/44C Cedar Avenue, Brighton 5048, South Australia

The Cygnet arrived in Holdfast Bay September 11th 1836. The Commissioners had appointed two vessels to carry their official Survey Party out to South Australia. Although they owned the ship Rapid, they only chartered the 239 barque Cygnet.

The Cygnet, dispatched by Colonel William Light from Rapid Bay November 5th 1836 and under the command of the Deputy Surveyor General George Strickland Kingston, landed the advanced survey party. Apart from the surveying equipment, the gunpowder magazine and supplies for the surveyors, the storehouse contained thousands of seeds for the immediate commencement of the vegetable gardens needed for the immigrant settlement.

The Cygnet's boats helped to bring the passengers to the sand bar near the shore. From there, the ladies and children were carried on shoulders to the beach.

It was these difficulties in landing the first immigrants that influenced Colonel Light's proposal for a jetty.
